Character, word and line counter
Paste your text and the numbers update as you type: characters, characters without spaces, words and lines. Each bar shows how much room you have left on a given network. An emoji counts as one unit, the way you see it, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
Limits checked at the source
Only numbers we found on an official page made the list, checked on November 5, 2026:
- Instagram bio, 150: Instagram Help Center.
- Instagram caption, 2,200: Meta developer documentation.
- X post, 280: X documentation. Paid accounts get a higher limit.
- TikTok bio, 80: TikTok support. Some accounts report more room, with no official announcement. The counter in Edit profile has the final say.
- YouTube title, 100: YouTube developer documentation.
Networks change their rules without notice. If your app shows a different number, trust your app. A limit isn't a goal, either: a bio of 90 well-chosen characters often says more than one of 150 stuffed with decoration. For a caption, the first line does most of the work, because that's what people see before they decide to keep reading.
Why meta descriptions aren't on the list
People keep repeating "160 characters", but Google says there is no limit: the snippet just gets cut to fit the screen. With no official number, we'd rather not invent a bar.
How emoji get counted
To a computer, a family emoji is a sequence of several codes and a country flag is two. A simple counter gives you a much higher number than you'd expect. This one uses your browser's grapheme segmentation, which counts what you actually see: one emoji, one unit. X is the exception, and its bar follows the company's published rule: an emoji weighs 2 and any link weighs 23, however long it is. The other networks don't publish a detailed rule, so treat the result as a good estimate when your text sits right at the limit. If you're that close, leave two or three characters of slack.
How to count your characters
- Paste or type your text in the box.
- Read the totals for characters, words and lines.
- Check the bar for the network you're posting on: green has room, yellow is close, red is over.
- Trim what's over and copy the text back.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, on social networks spaces and line breaks count. That's why you see both numbers, with and without spaces.
How does the counter define a word?
It uses the browser's own word segmentation, which handles accents and punctuation. A standalone number counts as a word and an emoji doesn't.
Does the text I paste get saved?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Close the page and the text is gone.
How many characters is a fancy letter?
Here a letter counts as one unit, even with an accent. Some platforms count styled letters differently, and X gives a weight of 2 to characters outside the Latin ranges.
